I am a solicitor in the Private Client department and have worked in the field for over three years. I have experience in:
Drafting wills, including advising upon the use of international private client law (European and non-European) and domicile;
Advising upon personal taxation, mainly in relation to Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax;
Drafting and advising upon the use of trusts – including personal injury trusts, disabled person’s trusts, life interest trusts, bare trusts, and discretionary trusts to name but a few;
The preparation and registration of lasting powers of attorney and enduring powers of attorney;
The administration of estates – I have administered estates where there are more than 30 beneficiaries and often act on international, cross border estates;
Post-death mitigation of Inheritance and Capital Gains tax; and
Court of Protection applications, including for the appointment of Deputies.
I am a fluent French speaker and often find my language skills come in use when dealing with foreign clients, notaries, and lawyers. I also have experience in dealing with claims made against an estate and provide the executors with clarity in what is often a difficult and stressful situation.

“I met Joshua Ryan for the second time. He has been great throughout the process of making my will. He was very helpful explaining things to me and finalizing was quick and easy. I am pleased with the service I received and would recommend them to others.”
“Joshua Ryan has provided excellent service over this matter which, although relatively straightforward, has been completed with efficient speed. He has provided me with clear professional advice over this, with an appropriate understanding of my current practical and emotional needs at this time. He continues to work to these high standards to the other work he is carrying out on my behalf.”
“I cannot praise highly enough the excellent service I received from Joshua Ryan, at Hodge, Jones & Allen Solicitors when dealing recently with my Will-writing enquiry. When you also consider that this particular service was actually offered to me as part of a community-spirited, charitable donation, it further demonstrates what an incredibly good firm this is to do business with.From the outset Joshua, representing the firm, put me at ease with his patience and in-depth knowledge, as well as his clear understanding of my need. I have been deliberating for literally about 20 years about writing a will, always viewing it as an onerous task to be done, however the opposite experience could not have been more true. Each step of the process was carefully explained in non-jargon, easy-to-understand language. Attention to detail was impressive at every stage, as was the frequency of communication. Documents were presented for my review, submission and sign-off in a timely way, and exactly when they were promised. I can honestly say that I had a really good experience all around, but what has been the most appreciated aspect, is the fact that, through Josh’s efforts, I now have a wonderful sense of security, after 20 years, in the knowlege that my children are now well catered for in the future. For this I am extremely grateful and I couldn’t recommend Josh, and his firm, highly enough. I shall be retaining them again in the future for other services and have no hesitation in recommending them to you.I would also like to thank the Charitable Foundation at University College Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for providing me with the opportunity to engage with this firm.Thank you again, all.Dr Gen Broadbent
“Josh was clear, concise and helpful. He explained things well, and was pleasant and friendly. Highly recommend.”
“Joshua dealt with my late uncle’s estate and I found him very helpful and he dealt with all aspects very promptly. I would have no hesitation recommending your firm.” Eve Robinson.
“Josh was very helpful in dealing with all my enquiries and also in the drawing up of the final will. I’d previously had no experience at all with dealing with the law and legal side of doing things and Josh made me feel more like a valued client than a complete ignoramus.”
“I was very pleased at the way HJA and you had handled my affairs and would happily suggest to my ‘not so young friends’ that they come to you for the same treatment!”
“Thanks so much for your displayed patience and understanding regarding the drafting of my will, which had been quite a challenge.”
Having spent a year in the French Alps, I love Alpine culture and cuisine. I aim to go skiing once a year- being attracted to the risk and adrenaline of the sport – and have visited many of the main ski slopes in France. Aside from being a Francophile, I enjoy reading, travelling and learning about different cultures.
