If a police officer or public official has knowingly and recklessly abused their powers or committed an act intending to injure you, you may have a claim for misfeasance. We have successfully taken action against the police for misfeasance on behalf of many clients who have suffered as a consequence of abuse of power by the police or other public officials.

Our Civil Liberties solicitors have a fearsome reputation in this area of law. Hodge Jones & Allen is ranked in the top tier of UK law firms for actions against the police (Chambers UK 2016). We have been highly successful in securing financial compensation from the police, apologies, admissions of wrong doing as well as changes in police practice.

By working closely with our large Criminal Defence team where needed, clients benefit from a comprehensive level of service unmatched by many other law firms. Our solicitors are active members of the Police Action Lawyers Group, a national organisation comprised of solicitors and barristers who specialise in representing claimants against the police.

The police and public officials have wide ranging powers, so it is vital that they are held accountable for their actions if they exceed their powers. You will find our solicitors are driven by a strong desire to see justice done if the police have mistreated you and will work tirelessly to hold the police to account.

Recent cases

  • Neville Lawrence (the father of murdered teenager, Stephen Lawrence) is being advised by Hodge Jones & Allen in relation to allegations of police corruption during the first murder investigation. We will be considering a legal response to the investigations into these allegations (Operation Herne and the Ellison Review) when they report.
  • We secured £12,000 in compensation for a grandfather of good character who was arrested and forcibly searched by the police whilst standing on a private area outside his own house. They found nothing on him but then detained him at a police station, where officers wrongly informed the custody sergeant that he had ‘previous’ for possession of drugs, which resulted in our client being strip searched. On searching him they still found nothing. We sued the police for misfeasance, false imprisonment and assault which resulted in compensation being paid to our client.
