Last weekend was without a doubt one of the most awe-inspiring and breath-taking (for some more than others!) weekends I have ever experienced. I was in Tenby, Wales watching my brother compete and become an ‘Ironman’ – completing the 140.6 miles ultra-distance triathlon that is widely considered to be one of the world’s toughest endurance races.
He, along with 1,754 others were phenomenal – there is no other way to describe it! They swam 2.4 miles in the choppy sea off the stunning, rugged Pembrokeshire coast, before cycling 112 miles through the beautiful but ridiculously hilly countryside around Tenby and then running a gruelling full marathon – just for fun!! Spectating was hard, I can only imagine what the competitors felt like!
I am inspired – certainly not to compete myself (!), but we can all learn a lesson from these great ‘warriors’; strength, hard work, grit and sheer determination can get you a very long way. It makes you achieve great, sometimes seemingly impossible things. The ‘race’ on Sunday may have been the pinnacle of their blood, sweat and tears (I certainly saw all 3), but the athletes’ journey to that point is just as inspiring. The training and their commitment, motivation, will-power and sacrifice is colossal and even those who, for one reason or another, were not able to complete this immense challenge that they had set themselves are inspirational. It shows what you can achieve if you really set your mind to it.
Hodge Jones & Allen have just welcomed their new trainee intake. I myself have only been with the Firm for a month. Whether we have been doing what we do for only a few weeks or for decades, we would all benefit from keeping their lesson in mind – hard work pays off!!
If any of you are inspired, next years’ Tenby Ironman is on Sunday 18th September!! If that’s not quite for you but you are inspired to do your bit, my brother ran for Spinal Injuries Association; a cause that’s very close to my family’s hearts. It is a remarkable charity and one that Hodge Jones & Allen are gold level corporate partners with. Any sponsorship would be greatly appreciated – read my brother’s story and donate at here.
