Pleural plaques are areas of scarring on the lining of the lungs. They may become more extensive but they do not become or develop into any other asbestos disease. They are generally thought to be symptomless and often show up as an incidental finding on an x ray.
Pleural plaques are caused when asbestos fibres breathed in penetrate the lining, or pleura, of the lungs causing scarring.
The disease is not thought to be dose related and every exposure to asbestos could cause pleural plaques in time.
DWP benefits are not available for pleural plaques as it is not accepted that they cause any disability.
It is no longer possible to be awarded compensation in England & Wales for pleural plaques as they are not considered an “injury” and you cannot therefore claim damages.
