Outstanding care and support from police officers celebrated at Brake’s 2021 Family Liaison Officer Awards

Three police officers who went above and beyond to support bereaved families have been recognised for their outstanding work in this year’s Brake Family Liaison Officer Awards. Brake, the road safety charity, announced the winners at an online ceremony on Wednesday 17 November to coincide with its annual Road Safety Week campaign.

Hodge Jones & Allen is proud to have been one of the law firms sponsoring the awards and ensuring the family liaison officers (FLOs) received the recognition they deserve for their invaluable work and exceptional commitment supporting families bereaved by road traffic collisions in their time of need. The awards were split across three categories: the Outstanding Officer Achievement Award; the Award for Excellent Longstanding Service; and the Family Award.

Outstanding Officer Achievement Award

PC Felicity Davis, from West Yorkshire Police, won the Outstanding Officer Achievement Award in recognition of her exemplary behaviour in a very challenging case, where she carefully balanced conflicting and complex aspects of the deployment.

Award for Excellent Longstanding Service

PC George Trayner, from Police Scotland, was presented with the Award for Excellent Longstanding Service. The judges commended his continued dedication, having spent over 20 years raising awareness of the vital work carried out by FLOs and encouraging new candidates to take part in training, mentoring and coaching.

Family Award

PS Darren Westall, from South Wales Police, was the winner of the Family Award. He was nominated by one of the families he supported, who praised his painstaking efforts to ensure they were given the information they needed, and thanked him for providing an invaluable source of comfort throughout the inquest and court proceedings.

Leticia Williams, Partner and head of our personal injury team said: “Our personal injury team was delighted to sponsor and support the nominees for the Brake Family Liaison Officer Awards 2021. Sadly, we do see the impact and devastation that road traffic deaths bring to individuals and their families and having the support of the FLOs is vital. Our congratulations to all those nominated for providing outstanding support to road crash victims.”
