Neville Lawrence OBE responds to conclusion of IOPC investigation into police corruption related to the original Stephen Lawrence murder investigation

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has this afternoon announced that the IOPC-managed investigation by the National Crime Agency into whether corruption or misconduct played a part in the failure of the original investigation into the murder of Stephen Lawrence is complete.

A file of evidence will now be provided to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to consider whether former officers should face charges.

Responding to the news, Stephen’s father Neville Lawrence has said:
“I welcome the news that this investigation, which has been running for over five years, has finally reached a conclusion and is taking the positive step of referring officers to the CPS. However, I have yet to see the investigation report. I need to see this to understand how their conclusions have been reached. It is 27 years since Stephen’s death and we are still seeking justice, including against the police who failed in the original investigation.”

Jocelyn Cockburn and Guy Mitchell of Hodge Jones & Allen, and Heather Williams QC and Adam Straw of Doughty Street Chambers represent Neville in relation to the Undercover Policing Inquiry (which opened this week) and ongoing investigations into allegations of police corruption.
