Mesothelioma Sufferer Secures Compensation From Government Payment Scheme

Our Client’s first job after leaving school was in the carpentry and joinery trade. He was exposed to asbestos dust from making fire doors: he had to fit asbestos sheeting as layers within the doors to make the doors fireproof. This work involved our Client cutting up the asbestos sheeting to size using a handsaw. This process was extremely dusty, with asbestos fibres landing on our Client’s face, in his hair and all over his body.
Our client was also required to build chicken houses and repair damaged chicken houses. This caused further exposure to asbestos dust as the houses were made of asbestos materials.
As our Client’s former employer is no longer trading, investigations were carried out to see if the relevant employers’ liability insurers could be identified. Those insurers could not be traced and so we made a claim on our Client’s behalf to the Diffuse Mesothelioma Payment Scheme (DMPS).
The Scheme provides compensation to mesothelioma sufferers who were negligently exposed to asbestos in the course of their employment but are unable to pursue their former employers because they are no longer trading and the relevant employers’ liability insurers cannot be identified.
Having provided all the relevant evidence and documentation to the Scheme Administrators, including extended research for company names and periods of exposure, our Client’s application was successful. A six-figure sum was secured for our Client.
