Supporting Survivors of Brain Injury and Spreading Awareness During Action for Brain Injury Week 2026

From 18-24 May 2026, Action for Brain Injury Week serves as an important opportunity to raise awareness of the lasting impact of brain injuries can have on individuals and families across the UK.

This year Headway UK wants to raise awareness by shining a light on the often invisible challenges of brain injury. The campaign advocates for better services and support for people affected by brain injury and for health professionals ti improve care and rehabilitation.

At HJA we are proud to support the Child Brain Injury Trust. Some of our clients are children who have suffered have a traumatic brain injury. The campaign this week is supported by the Child Brain Injury Trust to advocate, educate and celebrate the resilience of the children and families that the charity support.

At HJA, we recognise that behind every brain injury is a person whose life may have changed dramatically in a matter of seconds. Many of the clients we support through personal injury claims face not only physical injuries, but also emotional, cognitive, psychological and financial challenges that can continue long after the initial accident.

This week is about understanding the realities of living with a brain injury and recognising the importance of rehabilitation, support and ensuring that those affected are able to access the care and compensation they may need to rebuild their lives.

Understanding brain injuries

A brain injury occurs when damage to the brain affects the way a person functions physically, cognitively, emotionally and behaviourally. Brain injuries can range from mild concussions to severe and life changing injuries requiring lifelong care and support.

Many brain injuries arise in circumstances connected to personal injury claims, such as road traffic accidents, workplace accidents, slips and trips and many more.

The hidden impact of brain injuries

Unlike many physical injuries, the effects of a brain injury are not always immediately visible. Some individuals may suffer from serious and/or mild cognitive and emotional symptoms. The main symptoms, are memory loss, fatigue, personality and mood changes, speech difficulties, sensory sensitivity and depression.

Brain injuries can affect every aspect of a persons future from their career prospects and financial stability to their confidence and overall quality of life.

A brain injury often impacts not only the injured person but also those closest to them.

Family members frequently take on caring responsibilities while managing emotional stress and uncertainty surrounding recovery.

For some individuals, recovery may take months or years. Others may require long term support and specialist care for the rest of their lives. This is why early access to rehabilitation, medical treatment and financial support can be vital.

Rehabilitation following a brain injury.

No two brain injuries are the same, and recover pathways can vary significantly from person to person.

Rehabilitation involves support from neurologists, neuropsychologist, psychiatrist, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists.

Early rehabilitation can play a crucial role in improving long term outcomes

Supporting clients through complex personal injury claims

Brain injury claims are often legally and medically complex. They may involve extensive medical evidence, rehabilitation treatments, expert reports and long term financial considerations and claims.

Our priority is always to ensure that clients receive the support they need both now and in the future.

For many individuals, a successful personal injury claim can assist with access to specialist therapy, funding for ongoing extensive medical care, loss of earnings and future financial support, counselling and support for family members.
We recognise that compensation cannot undo what has happened. However, it can provide practical support and access to resources that may significantly improve a person’s quality of life and long term recovery outcomes.

Client focused vision

At HJA, we pride ourselves on taking a supportive approach and having a client focused vision throughout the legal process.

We understand that many clients dealing with brain injuries may also be coping with stress, anxiety, trauma or cognitive difficulties. For this reason, we aim to make the process as straightforward as possible while keeping clients informed and supported through every step of the way.

Our Personal Injury Solicitors appreciate the sensitivity of these cases and we are committed to helping clients navigate the legal process with empathy, professionalism and care.

During Action for Brain Injury Week 2026, we stand alongside survivors, families and carers in raising awareness of the challenges associated with brain injuries and the importance of access to ongoing support.
