The Power of Time – Early Rehabilitation
I had the pleasure of attending The Power of Time Conference in Manchester this month, hosted by Dorset Orthopaedic.
Dorset Orthopaedic
Dorset Orthopaedic is an organisation who has provided amputees and other seriously injured people with prosthetic and orthotic rehabilitation for the last 35 years.
At their “Power of Time” conference in June 2026 they bought to the forefront their simple and fundamental aim to give their patients independence and a good quality of life. Some of the company’s inspiring patients shared their stories of how the right rehabilitation at the right time changed their lives.
Importance of rehabilitation
In addition to several moving patient stories, industry leading professionals spoke on various topics including the role of physiotherapy, psychology, neuropsychology and case management, all of which facilitate a patient’s recovery journey. This holistic and multidisciplinary approach underpins the recovery process.
New (ish) technology was also discussed in the form of “osseointegration” whereby a permanent titanium implant is embedded into the injured person’s residual limb. The bone grows around the implant and once healed, a prosthesis attaches directly to the implant. One wearer of such a device described it as a “game changer”.
At Hodge Jones and Allen Solicitors we understand the importance of early rehabilitation in the recovery process for our clients.
Inspiring talks
At the conference, a former Gurkha, Hari Budha Magar, provided an insight to the trauma and difficulties he faced following an incident in Afghanistan which caused him to lose both legs in 2010 while serving with the British Army. He spoke of his mental and physical struggles following his accident. Despite his challenges, he became the first double above the knee amputee to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents. He developed and adapted various prosthetic components with the backing of Ottobock to enable him to complete his climbs.
The conference highlighted rehabilitation as the core element in the recovery process of a person who had suffered life changing injuries. At Hodge Jones & Allen, we know that rehabilitation and treatment are key to helping our clients early. We have access to top tier rehabilitation, prosthetic and orthotic experts, ensuring that our clients can get their independence and life back on track as soon as possible.
