Government fails in bid to close Islamic faith school over safeguarding issues

The Secretary of State for Education has today failed in an application to close Darul Uloom School in Chislehurst over safeguarding issues.

Following a hearing at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court, the school has been told it will not be removed from the independent schools register after lawyers told the court of significant changes to the leadership of the school.

The school’s solicitor, John Hartley, a partner at London solicitors Hodge Jones & Allen says: “The trustees of Darul UIoom School take their responsibilities for safeguarding children extremely seriously. They have made significant structural changes to the school’s leadership and will keep the safeguarding of those children in its care under constant review. However, they are pleased that the court has recognised improvements have been made and that there are no immediate reasons for the school to be permanently closed.”

Following an incident that was reported to the Metropolitan Police in May, the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead and Principal were both dismissed and are now barred from entering school premises.
