Appeal for Information – RSM Darwin Crew and Asbestos Exposure (1974–1976)

Our client, Mr. Peter Allen Card, has sadly been diagnosed with a terminal asbestos-related illness.

Mr. Card was exposed to asbestos dust during his employment with The Falkland Island Company between approximately 1974 and 1976, while working on board the RSM Darwin, a passenger cargo ship.

During this period, Mr. Card worked as a Fireman in the engine room, where his responsibility was to keep the furnace going. In the engine room, the boilers and the pipes were all lagged with asbestos. Mr. Card recalls that throughout his work in the engine rooms he was repeatedly exposed to asbestos dust when firing up furnaces, cutting and replacing asbestos-lagged pipes and carrying out valve changes, leaving him covered in dust on a daily basis.

Mr. Card spent two years on board this ship, travelling to destinations including Chile, Argentina, Uruguay (Montevideo), and the Falkland Islands.

We are seeking assistance from anyone who may have:

  • Records relating to the RSM Darwin during this period, or
  • Knowledge of the working conditions on board, or
  • Contact with former colleagues or crew members who served alongside Mr. Card.

Any information provided could be of great importance to our investigation.

If you think you may have information which could help the investigation, please contact Isobel Lovett directly on ilovett@hja.net or phone 0330 822 3451.
