Diagnosed with an Asbestos related disease? | HJA London

Asbestos fibres are microscopic, extremely strong and heat resistant. These qualities led to its widespread use across Britain between the 1950s and 1980s as insulation and fireproofing in buildings, as well as a huge range of industrial use.

Asbestos was banned in Britain in 1999. Unfortunately, asbestos still remains in buildings in Britain and it is still produced and exported by other countries.

When asbestos is disturbed or damaged, dust and fibres are released. When inhaled the fibres may cause illness.

If you have been diagnosed with an asbestos related illness and wish to make a claim, take advice.

body-advertorial-campaignBE AWARE

There is a time limit for claiming compensation from the organisation/company which exposed you to asbestos. Generally you must claim within three years from the date you know or suspect you have an illness caused by asbestos exposure at work through an employer’s negligence. If your illness is the result of someone else, you may have a claim.

WHY CLAIM?

If you can prove an employer wrongly exposed you to asbestos you may obtain money to provide for your own or your family’s financial needs and the care you may need. Bringing attention to a negligent employer/organisation will highlight a serious public health and safety issue.

Employees should be protected at work – their employers have a responsibility to do so. When that responsibility falls short and is inadequate, that’s when industrial disease, illness and injury occurs.

TYPES OF ASBESTOS RELATED ILLNESS INCLUDE:

  • Mesothelioma – a form of cancer which affects the lining of the lungs; sometimes the lining of the abdomen or heart. Develops from asbestos exposure sometimes decades earlier. Mesothelioma is an incurable illness.
  • Asbestosis – damage to the internal structure of the lungs which can cause serious breathing problems.
  • Lung cancer – a tumour within the lung, usually caused by smoking sometimes by asbestos exposure.
  • Diffuse pleural thickening – larger thickened areas of the lung lining are affected, often both lungs. Lung expansion can be restricted, leading to breathlessness.
