Bowel Cancer

Cancer of any type is a devastating diagnosis and it is believed that 1 in 3 people in the UK will be diagnosed with a cancer of some type in their lives. The general rule is that the earlier the diagnosis is made the better the outcome will be. A delay of years, or even months can be crucial for your outcome.

A delay in the diagnosis of bowel cancer can have serious impact on your health and your final outcome.

Bowel cancer symptoms often include;

  • Blood in your stools or rectal bleeding
  • A change in bowel habits
  • Diarrhoea, incontinence, constipation
  • Unexplained weight loss.

Prompt investigations should be performed to establish the cause of any of these symptoms. GPs are required to refer patients quickly if they meet certain criteria.

The referral may be under what is known as the ‘2 week rule’. After being referred hospital patients will be assessed and may undergo blood tests, CT scans and/or MRI scans, ultrasounds scans or X-rays to assess the situation.

Delay in diagnosing Bowel Cancer

A court is likely to consider a GP negligent if they do not follow certain guidelines when referring a patient. These guidelines are provided by The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) or local protocols.

Treatment

If diagnosed early the prospects for survival are good. Any delay in the diagnosis of the bowel cancer can, however have very serious consequences.
