Sister of young Londoner who died after psychotic breakdown attacks lack of mental health resources

Posted on 13th October 2017

The sister of a young Londoner who suffered a psychotic breakdown and died after a mental health bed could not be found today warned further tragedies were “inevitable”.

Louise Phuong, 29, said the way her brother Joseph was treated by the NHS and the Met police highlighted the lack of support available.

An inquest last week heard that Mr Phuong, a 32-year-old “computer whizz” with a 10-year history of paranoid schizophrenia, died on June 5, 2015, after being restrained on numerous occasions, secluded and tranquillised.

Nancy Collins, a partner in civil liberties department, represented Mr Phuong’s family at the inquest.
