What is Military Covenant?

The term “Military Covenant” refers to the mutual obligations that exist between servicemen and women. This promise is made in recognition of the sacrifice that service personnel make in respect of their civil liberties and their agreement to follow orders including orders to place themselves in danger in the defence of others. It is an informal understanding in the Military Covenant rather than a legally-enforceable deal, but it has been protected through convention and custom and it is recognised by all services.

Service personnel are given an assurance that, if they are injured as a result of their service, they will receive additional support. The responsibilities detailed in the Military Covenant include a duty that extends to the continuing medical healthcare of injured personnel. This duty of care extends to providing priority medical treatment to War Pensioners for injuries received during their service.

Below is a list of common areas where you could rightly claims if you have been badly let down by the MoD:

  • Healthcare - with a lot of military hospital closures, soldiers returning from the frontline are being treated by the NHS. Although they do their best, relatives complain that that the
    staff do not have the time nor expertise to deal with wounds sustained in battle.
  • Housing - a lot of staff employed by the MoD live in ageing barracks which are blighted by leaking roofs, broken windows and faulty electricals.
  • Pay - some staff sent on six months tours of duty without a
    single day off are being paid below the minimum wage;
  • Kit - soldiers have been left exposed by a series of blunders
    over kit.
