Before you even contemplate divorce
proceedings, you should ensure that you are fully informed of all
the information. As long as you have been married for at least one
year and you have basic grounds for divorce, either partner of a
marriage can apply for divorce to the court in England and
Wales.
There is only one basic ground for a divorce -
the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage. The court will need
evidence proving the grounds for divorce. This can be one the
following:
- Adultery
- Unreasonable behaviour
- Desertion
- Two years separation
- Five years separation
Steps in getting a
divorce

law in England and Wales follows a chronological set of steps with
various documents completed and filed at Court. Your evidence is
set out in a document called a petition. If you file for divorce
you are called the petitioner and your husband or wife is called
the respondent. Issues tend to arise when documents (a petition) is
completed incorrectly or there is a disagreement between the
