The Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act assists people who are caught up in disputes with their partner, family or relatives relating to trusts of land. The law came in response to the amount of disputes between unmarried partners and couples with no children, who wanted to sell a property whilst in the process of separating.

If the property is owned in joint names, it is presumed that each owner is entitled to 50% of the money released on a sale.

If the property is in your partner’s name, but you have contributed towards the deposit and mortgage, you may be entitled to a share in the property.
