Generally, riots and public order disturbances happen very suddenly. Riots are difficult to control and in the general confusion the police can sometimes react strongly to situations they perceive to be dangerous.

These types of incidents begin when there is an atmosphere of dissent or ill-treatment. What starts as legitimate protest against perceived unfairness can all too quickly spiral out of control and lead to large-scale destruction and looting.

Riot legal advice

If you take part in a riot, you can be arrested under S.1 of the Public Order Act 1986. A riot is defined as twelve or more people gathered together threatening (or carrying out) violence for a single purpose.

If you are charged, you can receive a sentence of 10 years imprisonment, plus a fine.

London Broadwater Farm Riots 1985

Hodge Jones & Allen have a long history of defending people who have been arrested during riots. We represented Winston Silcott, wrongly convicted of killing policeman PC Blakelock in the Broadwater farm riots of North London in 1985. His conviction was quashed in 1991 after tests suggested that the evidence against him had been fabricated.
