What is a Court martial?
A court martial is a legal military hearing that takes place in a military court and is similar to a civil court of law. Just like any other non-military trial, evidence is presented and there is a cross-examination of witnesses. The Court generally comprises a Judge Advocate and between three and seven warrant officers and commissioned officers.

Courts-Martial deal with minor criminal offences (known as a District Court martial) to more serious military offences (known as a General Court martial). Punishments for minor offences can carry sentences of up to two years’ imprisonment whereas more serious and complex cases have no such limitation limits and can carry maximum punishments similar to that of civilian courts.
