Case report: Charity Fraud
Date: May 2010
Solicitor: Ruth Harris
Southwark Crown Court
Ruth Harris, an associate in the criminal department at Hodge Jones and Allen, represented KB who successfully contested long-running fraud proceedings before Southwark Crown Court. KB stood trial with 8 others. The case centred round a charity, the ‘People’s Opportunity to Work Trust’. MPs, church leaders and other notables, were persuaded to lend their support and provide the organisation with a veneer of respectability. Three men were charged with conspiracy to defraud after they were said to have used the charity as a front to deal with huge sums stolen in a series of complex thefts. KB, with 5 others, were said to have laundered the proceeds of these scams. While three of her co-defendants were convicted, Ruth’s client was found not guilty on the 5th May 2010 by unanimous verdict. She was relieved to return to caring for her two young children and elderly father without a stain on her character.
