Man wins personal injury compensation after workplace accident
23 Aug 2010
A man has succeeded in his battle for
personal
injury compensation after sustaining life-changing injuries in
an
accident at
work.
Peter Snowling, 50, had been loading a lorry with sacks of peas
when he fell from the ramp at the back after losing his footing,
This is Local London reports.
He sustained a range of injuries, the most serious being a
fractured skull and damage to his spine which mean he will probably
never work again.
Mr Snowling took legal action against his employer, who cannot be
named for legal reasons, in order to receive remuneration for his
lost earnings.
His wife Sheila only works part-time, so they were concerned his
accident could leave them struggling financially.
"I can't walk so far as I did before. Walking uphill is a task,"
the victim explained.
In a new development, the employer has agreed to a GBP 250,000
personal injury compensation payout, although it is not clear if
full liability has been admitted.
Mr Snowling said he is pleased with the outcome, but insisted it is
not a lot given his injuries.
"This sum I have got I have to live on now because it's highly
unlikely I will work again," he pointed out.
According to statistics published by the Royal Society for the
Prevention of Accidents, 15 per cent of all major injuries in
transport and logistics in 2005-06 were caused by handling.
Musculoskeletal disorders and stress are the two main causes of
work-related ill-health in this sector, the organisation
said.
