Always seek expert divorce advice, Britons reminded
02 Mar 2010
British people have been reminded that they should always seek the
advice of a specialist family lawyer when divorcing, counsel which
could be particularly pertinent for older couples in the process of
separating.
Christina Tait of independent information website DivorceAid.co.uk
told the Express that a good divorce lawyer will not only organise
the division of joint assets, but can assist with pensions and
other separate monies.
This could be vital for the over-50s, who may have accumulated
pensions which are worth more than their property.
"Divorce is easy but it's finances that take the work," Ms Tait
added.
The expert was speaking in response to recent figures from the
Office for National Statistics, which showed that the divorce rate
among women aged 50-59 and men over 60 increased in 2008.
This comes after the Law Society recently urged couples not to take
matters into their own hands if they are thinking of divorcing, but
to seek the advice of a lawyer to avoid potential
complications.
President Robert Heslett said the legalities can be difficult to
understand, particularly during times of emotional turmoil, so an
expert will be able to provide the impartial, objective advice
necessary to facilitate the process.
Victoria Walker, a solicitor in the family team at Hodge Jones
& Allen LLP and an accredited specialist in the financial
aspects surrounding divorce, commented: "We have a large family
team with a lot of experience and expertise in dealing with all
kinds of issues with divorcing couples, especially financial
disputes."
