HJA solicitor discusses riots on ITV
10th August 2011
Sean Caulfied, partner in the Hodge Jones &
Allen criminal defence team, appeared on ITV's
topical programme 'Daybreak' this morning to discuss the
possible sentencing for people arrested during the recent
riots.
The unrest, which initially began in Tottenham, North London,
has been ongoing since Saturday night. Sparked by the
shooting of Mark Duggan, a 29 year old male from
Tottenham by police, rioting has now taken
place across the UK. London, Manchester
and Birmingham, as well as many other areas, have been
affected. Over 700 people have been arrested in
London alone.
On the programme this morning, Sean discussed
maximum sentences, as well as whether young people would be
prosecuted if they were found to be taking part in the
riots.
He also stated that court proceedings may take a long time,
especially for 'not guilty' pleas. Cuts to legal aid funding
may also make the process longer and put further pressure on the
courts, even if they remain open for 24 hours for the next few
days.
Sean is also due to appear on Newsnight this evening (Wednesday)
at 10.30pm, BBC 2.
